Reflections for a New Year

Day 8 - Be Generous

Generosity is an attitude of mind
That can easily be diminished,
By the pressures and expectations
Of a world that counts the cost,
Expects results,
And pursues the bottom line.
Resist the temptation to let these things define you.

Cultivate within yourself a generous spirit;
Take time to appreciate what you have,
And do not become consumed by what you are denied.
Do not take for granted the generosity of others;
Learn to appreciate the gifts that life has brought your way,
And let that stir you,
To give what you can for the good of those around you.

When others' faults become apparent,
Consider what qualities they might nonetheless conceal.
When confronted by their failure,
Let it be an opportunity to console and encourage,
Rather than blame and condemn.
Remember again the gifts of grace
That God has lavished upon you,
And determine to display to a watching world,
Their worth and presence through your words and deeds.
