A common thread in today's readings is that Christian discipleship can often be lived out in an arena of conflict and struggle. The world of work can often be one such arena, so there is opportunity for a congregation to recognise and acknowledge those situations and contexts that they find challenging. Jesus faces opposition from Sadducees, seeking to undermine his credibility with their trick questions, Job is challenged to hold fast to his faith in the face of significant adversity, while the Psalm writer pleads innocence and seeks vindication in the face of those described as enemies.

While each person's circumstances will be unique and different, the experiences outlined in today's readings, offer themselves as opportunities to connect with contemporary life circumstances. Through our engagement with work and society, the same issues of deliberately laced questions, personal affliction, threatening environments etc. can often be confronted. There is opportunity to acknowledge and seek God's help in facing such realities.
