Today's reading from Jeremiah opens up the theme of 'vocation', which needs to be recognised as more than a synonym for particular roles within the church, but a relationship of synergy between the person we are and the job that we do. God's message to Jeremiah is clear, the role to which he is now being called is one that he was born to fulfil. When work reflects God's ideal, this should be true for everyone, yet we can also trace theological and practical narratives that acknowledge that this is not always so. But pausing to recognise Jeremiah's sense of vocation, offers the chance for everyone to reflect on the roles and responsibilities they carry in daily life. To what degree are these a vocation from God? Might these roles feel different if they were perceived in this way? What are the issues and experiences that challenge this ideal? How can we pray and support one another in the light of our responses to these questions?
