Today's Old Testament readings convey a strong message of hope and restoration. Their immediate context is the exile of God's people and the devastation of their land. The New Testament readings root the fulfilment of these promises in the coming of Jesus.

But in applying this in particular to the world of work and commerce, a congregation could be invited to reflect on issues of prosperity and wellbeing more generally. There are many examples in our world of successful endeavour and profitable outcome. Yet we also have to acknowledge that rather than resulting in the wellbeing of all, the result can often be greater inequality in our world. This might provide an opportunity to prayerfully reflect on how Christians are called to work for a different outcome.

The theme of restoration also provides opportunity to reflect on various projects in our nations and around the world that seek to restore the wellbeing of creation. This might be an opportunity to pray for environmentalists, those engaged in international aid and development, companies involved in the development of sustainability projects etc.
