Today's New Testament readings focus, each in their own way, on the impact of the Holy Spirit on our Christian discipleship. Jesus offers the promise of the Spirit's presence, while the epistle outlines some of the practical implications of the Spirit's work within our human character. This practical application of the promise of Jesus provides opportunity to consider how our faith identity impacts everyday life. Work can be a place of struggle and challenge, yet in such circumstances endurance, character and hope can be a powerful witness of faith and a source of strength and encouragement to others. The Spirit equips us to live out faith in the whole of life.

The narrative of Trinity embeds this reality in the other persons of the Godhead, which enables further exploration of issues around work and life. The narrative from Proverbs belongs to that Old Testament tradition that equates the Spirit of God to the character of 'Wisdom'. As the interplay between the Creator and Wisdom Spirit is outlined, so we are reminded of the scope of Creation, reaching into every aspect of life and existence. Wisdom's pre-existence is a reminder that every aspect of human endeavour and enterprise can be informed and enriched through seeking God's purpose and direction. Thus a congregation might consider how God's guidance and purpose is pursued in the various spheres and sectors in which their daily lives participate.

Jesus, God Incarnate, speaks of the Spirit dwelling within his disciples, in continuation of his own ministry amongst them. Recognising this, a congregation might consider how their own faith values and identity is incarnated through their day to day activities and endeavours.
