The reading from Acts recounts Peter's visit to the house of Cornelius, a meeting which represents a watershed in his understanding of the Gospel and his inherited prejudices. Cornelius was a senior officer in the Roman Army, an occupation that would have generated disdain among Peter's contemporaries. This offers itself as a platform to consider what occupations attract prejudice in our contemporary society, and whether or not these are always justified. Thus a congregation might consider how the Christian community is challenged to think differently, and how God might be at work in such situations.

While the Old Testament readings do not hone in on any specific area of work, they each remind us of the extent of God's reign and rule - moving consciousness beyond the immediate boundaries of worship to recognise God's presence in the whole of creation. This can be used as a basis for acknowledging that every aspect of human activity, including our work and employment, is part of God's Kingdom, and to consider how the values and beliefs of our faith impacts day to day life.
